It is very interesting to see how the Cornell Box has developed over time (http://www.graphics.cornell.edu/online/box/history.html). At first, there were no occluding objects because the box was computed analytically. Then, a radiosity-based solution was tried, and this further progressed to BRDF devised through spherical harmonics.
