This scene was transformed by doing 45 degree rotations around each axis and then rotating the camera correspondingly to create the same scene, but not axis aligned (i.e. in the original scene the floor would be parallel to the xy-plane or the left wall in the image might be parallel to the z-y plane). When the scene is axis-aligned we get tight bounding boxes for the BVH as illustrated in the following slide, which gives better efficiency.
