Abstract

We can easily recognize objects and properties of the world by looking. If machines had this ability they could be much more intelligent and useful. I will present a taxonomy of visual recognition, review the state of the art and discuss a number of fascinating open problems.

About the Speaker

Pietro Perona's research focusses on visual psychophysics, modeling of biological vision and computational vision. He has worked on image segmentation, texture, motion, 3D shape, object recognition and biological motion. Perona is Professor of Electrical Engineering and of Computation and Neural Systems at the California Institute of Technology. He is the Director of the NSF Engineering Research Center on Neuromorphic Systems Engineering.
And he's a fantastic speaker... (personal comment by Sebastian Thrun)
