Windows NT Network Configuration

It is important to get the network configured properly on these machines. In particular, many of the services that are on by default need to be disabled or they will cause problems.

There is more information on configuring NT machines, regarding emacs, file serving, service packs, and other obnoxious details.

This is a step by step list that will put the network in a reasonable state. Click on the links to see screenshots from the setup process.

Under Control Panel -> Services, select "Computer Browser" and change its "Startup..." state to disabled.

Select Control Panel -> Server.

 Type in a Description of the form:     
  nnn - NT4wks - ......
 Where 'nnn' is the room number in Gates and '.....' is a comment
 For example
  363 - NT4wks - Dell 610t for Snarfl Project
Select Control Panel -> Network.

Identification should look like this:

  Compute Name: <your computer name (same as DNS name)>
  Domain      : GRAPHICS-DOMAIN
Services should look (something) like this, but don't worry if there are differences:
  Network Services:
    Computer Browser
    Microsoft TCP/IP Printing
    NetBIOS Interface
    RPC Configuration
    Server
    Simple TCP/IP Services
    Workstation
Protocols should look like this:
   Network Protocols:
     TCP/IP Protocol
Any other protocols should be removed, they are not necessary and can cause problems if present.

Select TCP/IP Protocol, and click Properties.

IP address should look like this:

  IP Address: <your address here>
  MASK:       255.255.255.0
  GATEWAY:    171.64.77.1
DNS should look like this:
  Host Name: <your host name>
  Domain:    Stanford.EDU
  DNS Server Search Order:
    171.64.7.55
    171.64.7.77
    171.64.7.99
  Domain Suffix Search Order:
    <none>
WINS Address should look like this:
  Primary   WINS Server            : 171.64.77.200
  Secondary WINS Server            : <none>
  Enable DNS for Windows Resolution: YES
  Enable LMHOSTS Lookup            : NO
  Scope ID                         : <empty>
Routing should look like this:
  Enable IP Forwarding: NO
