The exact symptoms are that any attempts to use the *compression* hardware spawn error messages that will look something like this:
Cannot reset memory buffer for screen display VL: Buffer allocation failed.
Scenario: you've set capture to use the SGI JPEG compression. You will indeed see the incoming video in the capture window (since the video in/out still works fine), you'll hit the red record button, and then after you hit the stop button a little "processing" dialog box appears. Then an error message box pops up. This is the sign of the problem. Often then the CPU meter will often show that the entire CPU is swamped in system time (i.e. the bar is all red), a condition that can persist until the next reboot. (The system keeps trying to communicate with the unreachable board.)
The fix, in detail:
Power down the O2, unplug it, unplug all the video/audio cables from the side ports and the SDI dongle from the camera video port. The video board is the one closest to the side port. Push down on the black lever thing to unlatch the board. Pull it all the way out, then push it back in and pull the lever back up to latch it. Replace all the cables and power it back up. Check if that fixed the problem.
