Win98 Ethernet Configuration

This document describes how to set up an ethernet connection for Windows 98, in particular for the Vaios. It is not yet clear how it might interact with setting up ethernet or dial-in networking either at home or in your on-campus apartment, or how it will interact with WaveLAN cards.

If you decide to use this, be sure to read about the ethernet caveat described below.

  1. Turn on your ethernet port.

Right click on My Computer, choose Properties, go to Device Manager.

Under Network adapters, double click Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter.

    Click Enable Device.

    Ok, then Close, to exit.

  2. Setup networking.

    Click on Start--Settings--Control Panel--Network.

    Click on the Identification tab

    Click on the Configuration tab

In the box labelled "The following network components are installed", repeatedly click on every protocol except TCP/IP and press Remove. Protocols are the ones that look like a wire with a plug in the middle.

In the same box, double-click on File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.

    Double-click on TCP/IP -> Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter (10/100). Press Properties.

Click on the IP Address tab. Under this tab:

Click on the DNS Configuration tab. Under this tab:

Click on the Gateway tab. Under this tab, add 171.64.77.1 as a New Gateway. This should be your only gateway.

Click on the WINS Configuration tab. Under this tab:

Click OK twice, then reboot if asked to do so.

  3. Test TCP/IP + SMB connections

  4. Enable plain text passwords for Unix files via Samba

Ethernet Caveat

If you enable ethernet, you potentially will suffer from longer resume times after suspending your laptop (using e.g. Fn Esc), especially if you do not connect the ethernet port to anything. If you are not expecting to be connected to the ethernet, you might consider disabling the ethernet port using steps similar to those you took to enable it:

Right click on My Computer, choose Properties, go to Device Manager.

Under Network adapters, double click Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter.

Click Disable in this hardware profile.

Ok, then Close, to exit.

There are other ways of disabling the ethernet port, but as pointed out by Homan, this method can be used without forcing you to reboot Windows.
