Despite whatever planning or hierarchical layout is performed, errors in the design are bound to show up. In the case of the Nintendo Tennis code, changes were necessary at the alu level and a signal needed to be propagated up to the controller logic. Having a flexible design that allowed these changes to be made is critical for working out bugs discovered in the testing phase.
