CS348B Spring 2019 Rendering Competition

The renderings below were created for the rendering competition in CS348B: Image Synthesis Techniques, taught by Pat Hanrahan and Matt Pharr in the Spring quarter of 2019.
Grand Prize

Summertime Iridescence
by Jennifer Tao and Cynthia Jia

Cynthia and Jennifer modeled iridescence in seashells and sunglasses by simulating thin film interference for films of varying thickness. They also modeled sand using a hair particle system.

First Prize

Realistic Whiskey and Vodka
by Xianzhe Zhang and Wen Zhou

Xianzhe and Wen implemented volumetric photon mapping in PBRT to simulate light scattering in liquid and ice. They also added layered materials for rendering the background objects.

Second Prize

Smoky Forest
Iyal Suresh and Varun Nambiar

Iyal and Varun procedurally generated trees and improved PBRT's volumetric sampling implementation to simulate light scattering through smoke in a forest.
