Some definitions in context:

Discrete: individually separate and distinct

Stochastic: randomly determined, can be analyzed statistically but can't predict individual occurrences

Microfacet: small faces, this refers to the idea that a surface can be modelled as a collection with randomly determined height fields

Other useful vocab:

BRDF: bidrectional reflectance distribution function, defines how light is reflected at an opaque surface -inputs: incoming and outgoing light directions, outputs: reflectance as ratio of outgoing radiance to incoming irradiance

microsurface: microfacet surface

macrosurface: underlying smooth surface
