What's Old

  • (11/25/02) Prof. Ileana Streinu points out that Leopold Vietoris (1891--2002), for whom the Mayer-Vietoris sequence was named, has died at the age of 111. He published 75 papers, one at the age of 103, and more than half after the age of sixty. The obituary in the Notices of AMS points out that the Rips complex we discussed in Lecture 8 was first invented by him and properly should be called Vietoris-Rips.
