Subject: RE: [pleasantandsarahskin] Pleasant and Mosby's relationship/Eliz and Sarah relationship
Reply-To: pleasantandsarahskin@yahoogroups.com

It is said by some that Sarah and Elizabeth were sisters. The will of her father Nathaniel Jeffries does not list a child named Elizabeth, but that doesn't necessarily mean that she wasn't his child. I've seen many a will where certain proven children of a couple are intentionally left out, sometimes in cases where the child married someone their father didn't like, etc. Not saying that's the case here, but we just need to keep an open mind to the possibility that the girls might have been siblings. So far, I've found no documentation which proves or disproves the relationship between Sarah and Elizabeth or Pleasant and Mosby.

 WILL OF NATHANIEL JEFFRIES
(Transcribed from a copy found in Chancery Court Papers-W. S. Morton)

"In the name of God, Amen. I, Nathaniel Jeffries, of the County of
Buckingham, being in sound mind and memory, do make and ordain this to be my
last Will and Testament, in the manner and form following, after my just
debts being paid:
Imprirnis, I give and bequeath to my son, William Jeffries, 40 acres of
land, more or less, adjoining Hooper's Road and line where he now lives, to
him and his heirs forever. My will and desire is that he is to enjoy no more
part of my land.
Item, I lend to my daughter, Sally Childress, one negro girl named,
Ailee, during her natural life, after her decease my desire is the said Ailee
and her increase be equally divided among my said daughter, Sally Childress'
children. Also I give my said daughter, Sally Childress, one feather bed and
furniture, to her and her heirs forever. My will and desire is that she have
no more of my estate.
Item, I give to my son, Jesse Jeffries, one negro boy named, David, also
one horse colt, also an equal part of the estate I shall leave with his
mother, to him and his heirs forever.
Item, I give to my daughter, Mary Ackers, one feather bed and furniture
to her and heirs forever, and no other part of my estate.
Item, I give to my daughter, Susannah Harvey, five shillings, and my will
is that she have no more of my estate.
Item, I give to my beloved wife, Mary Jeffries, all the rest of my
estate, viz.--land, negroes, horses, cattle, household furniture and
everything I possess that could be called my estate, during her natural life
or widowhood. After her decease, I give and bequeath to my son, John
Jeffries, that part of land on Hooper's Road on the North side to Willis
Creek.
My will is that all the rest of my land be equally divided between my two
sons, namely, James Jeffries and Jesse Jeffries.
My will and desire is that my sons, Thomas Jeffries, and Nathaniel
Jeffries, and William Jeffries, John Jeffries, James Jeffries, Jesse
Jeffries, Lucy Brown, Nancy Morris. I do appoint my well beloved wife, Mary
Jeffries, to be my executrix. My will and desire is that after my beloved
wife, Mary Jeffries' decease, that my estate, both real and personal, be
equally divided among my aforesaid children, namely, Thomas Jeffries,
Nathaniel Jeffries, William Jeffries, John Jeffries, James Jeffries, Jesse
 Jeffries, Lucy Childress, Nancy Morris.
In testimony and confirmation whereto I have set my hand and seal this
 29th. day of June, 1793.
Note the interlining was afore it was signed.
                                                 Nath'l. Jeffries--(Seal)
Signed, sealed and delivered in presence of us: John Redding, Natt
 Morris, William Jeffries, Jesse Jeffries.
At a Court held for Buckingham County, the 14th. day of October, 1795,
This last Will and Testament of Nathaniel Jeffries, dec'd. was proved" &c.

Buckingham County VA Clerk’s Declaration of Marriage

I, Rolfe Eldridge, Clerk of the County Court of Buckingham in the State of Virginia hereby certify that I have carefully examined the records and files of my office and have not been able to find any register returned of the marriage of Pleasant Childers and Sarah Jeffries, but that a license issued from this office for that purpose appears by a bond given on the 30th day of March 1785 of which the following is a copy:

“Know all men by these presents that we, Pleasant Childers and John Jeffries are held and firmly bound unto the Governor and Council of the Commonwealth of Virginia and their successors in the sum of fifty pounds current money, to which payment well and truly to be paid, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, and administrators jointly and severally firmy by here presents. Sealed with our seals and dated this 30th day of March 1785. Whereas a marriage is shortly intended to be had and solemnized between the above bound Pleasant Childers and Sarah Jeffries. Now the condition of the above obligation is such that if there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force and (effect?)
                                                                                        Pleasant Childers (seal)
                                                                                        John Jeffries (seal)”

That no register is found here, ought to raise no presumption that the marriage did take place, as it has happened as often as otherwise, that ministers of the Gospel have failed to return to the office lists of marriages solemnized by them.
In testimony whereof, I hereto set my hand and affix the seal of my office this twenty-sixth day of December in the year one thousand, eight hundred and fifty.

                                                                                         Rolfe Eldridge, C. B. C.

I believe the John Jeffries who signed as surety on the bond was Sarah's brother John. It was not uncommon for a brother to sign the bond. I've seen it many times in Pike Co KY records where the old man didn't feel like coming down to the courthouse to do business and he'd just send one of his sons with letters of consent and they'd also sign the bonds with their future brother-in-law. Maybe that's what happened here.

So, so far it's still a mystery as to the relationships of Mosby & Elizabeth and Pleasant & Sarah. I don't think Mosby and Pleasant were brothers though based on records I have seen to date, but something may come up later that sheds more light on the matter.

I'm sorry to join so late and not know what's been going on before
in discussions, but I have a few statements and questions:

My question about the Jeffries came because of the conflicting
conclusions that we, some of the Childers researchers, have come up
with from the information that we have found. We're seeking help,
any theories, conjecture, or data? on who the parents of Elizabeth
and or Sarah Jeffries might have been. They are listed as born in
VA and PA.

FACT: Elizabeth Jeffries married Mosby Childers March 8, 1785
Greenbriar, Alderson No proven parents for either.

Alderson is hundred miles west and south of Charlottesville or "in
Linville Creek Baptist Church, Alderson, Rockingham Co. Va." Now WVA

Mosby Childers was in the Rev War and fought in the Battle of
Monmouth and Brandywine. He was seriously wounded. We cannot find
where he met his future wife or who her parents were.

1. We have Jeffries Ford at the Brandywine. We assume (yes, I know
how dangerous that is) that is was named after a Jefferies Family.
It is on the returning path to VA, from the war, and was part of PA.

2. FACT: We have Nathaniel and Mary Jeffries parents of Sarah
Jeffries, who married Pleasant Childers. We have not information
that would connect either group as relatives except their respective
names, timeframe, and the location of the marriages.

3.PLEASANT (I)2 CHILDERS was born about 1761 in NC, and died April
25, 1839 in Pike Co KY. He married SARAH "SALLY" JEFFRIES April 16,
1785 in Buckingham Co VA, ( the bond was signed by sol . a John
Jeffriess), daughter of NATHANEAL JEFFRIES and MARY (possibly TATE?
NOTE: Some researchers list her as having the surname "Chalfant",
however, upon further research, I find that this Mary could not have
been Mary Chalfant. According to a CHALFANT researcher, Mary
Chalfant b. abt 1760 in Chester Co PA married a Nathaniel Jefferis
b. abt 1732 also of Chester Co PA. Therefore, dates and places do
not match as our Mary was born in VA. [TLM]). She was born Abt.
1765 in VA, and died August 10, 1843 in Pike Co KY. But, the info
is used as parents, so far.

4. From: Carol T. York WILL: Nathaniel Jefferies Buckingham 29

Susannah Harvey. Wife Mary Jefferies. Son John Jefferies. Sons:
Thomas Jefferies, Nathaniel Jefferies, William Jefferies, John
Jefferies, James Jefferies, Jesse Jefferies. Lucy Brown and Nancy
